How to Choose Replacement Windows

Category: Replacement Windows

One of the most basic methods of home improvement is through the installation of replacement windows. No matter how insignificant they may seem, windows are actually capable of putting a whole new “feel” to the home. It can make a house look gloomy or sunny depending on the design and make chosen by the homeowner. For this reason, installing one takes time and patience on the part of the owner. For those who are thinking about installing replacement windows for home improvement, following are some tips on how to go about the task.

Choose the Type of Window

There are various types of window replacements that homeowners can choose from. They can go for wood, vinyl, steel, aluminum or fiberglass. Each one provides excellent features to a house although currently, the most popular type seems to be vinyl. Make sure to choose a durable item that puts a new “spin” to the home without being too expensive.

Wind and Structural Load

This refers to the durability of the product in relation to outside forces. Wind load basically means that the window is capable of resisting damage due to pressure from the wind – especially if one is living in an area where storms happen often. As for the structural load, this means the ability of the window to resist pressure as a whole. If it sounds too complicated then simply keep in mind that the rate of structural load should be around DP50 or more. Sellers should be able to provide better information regarding this so don’t be afraid to ask.

Water Resistance

For homes that are constantly barraged with rain, it might be best to go for materials that are resistant to the wet season. This could be anything from vinyl to fiberglass depending on the preferences of the homeowner. Wood might not be a good choice though as the material is subject to the mercy of the elements. Again, don’t be afraid to ask the replacement windows contractor regarding the resistance of the window to water.

Style and Design of the Replacement Windows

When it comes to this consideration, homeowners would need to see a wide array of samples to come at a decision. Make sure to check out different samples or even get a glimpse of the replacement windows contractor’s portfolio to get an idea of what they can provide. Of course, keep in mind the general design of the house and how it would look with the new window. Make sketches if possible or use software to see the final product.

Standards

Check out the National Fenestration Ratings Council pertaining to replacement windows. This basically refers to the ability of the window to keep the heat inside the house (U-Factor) and its effectiveness in blocking heat coming from the outside (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient). Ratings for U-Factor are around .20 to 1.20 while Solar Heat Gain Coefficient runs from 0 to 1. Lower ratings means the product is better.

Of course, these aren’t the only considerations when installing replacement windows. Make sure to talk it out with the remodeling contractor to verify the specifics of the transaction from budget, finishing date and exactly what changes will be made.
